On Thursday 10th February, the Year 11 Boys’ Football team continued their journey in the County Cup, travelling to play away against Priory Belvoir Academy.

As expected in the latter phase of a cup competition, the quality of football on display was very high. However, both teams struggled slightly due to the poor weather conditions. Despite English Martyrs’ being the stronger team in terms of possession, the hosts took an early lead and held onto it until half-time. They then doubled their advantage not long into the second half and it looked like it was going to be a frustrating afternoon for English Martyrs’.

Through great effort and perseverance, English Martyrs’ pulled a goal back with 12 minutes remaining in the match to make it a tense finish. The comeback was then completed a few minutes before the end and the match ended 2-2, resulting in another match to be determined by penalties.

Possibly through experience of the previous round, the English Martyrs’ penalty takers kept their cool and composure and secured a place in the next round by winning 4-2 on penalties.

The squad now travels away to The Wigston Academy to compete in the semi-final of the competition. Congratulations to all students involved, and good luck for the next round … Could this be the year they secure silverware for the English Martyrs’ trophy cabinet?
