English Martyrs’ football teams are reaching new heights on the pitch, with a string of successes across the Senior School this year.

Year 7

On Monday 11th January, the year 7 boys’ football team played the West Leicester Area final against Babington Academy at English Martyrs’.

English Martyrs’ dominated the first 15 minutes of play, dominating possession of the ball and made multiple goal-scoring chances. As the game progressed, both teams grew in confidence and took their chances in front of goal. At one point the score was 3-3, however English Martyrs’ continued to be the dominant side and eventually won 6-3.

A fixture against our fellow CMAT school awaits us in the next round of the county cup, as St Paul’s Catholic School will be played in the next stage.

Year 8

The year 8 boys’ football team also won enough of their previous West Leicester fixtures earlier in the year to secure a place in the final against Castle Mead.

This fixture was played under floodlights on AstroTurf at English Martyrs’ and both teams had to adapt their usual styles of play. The game itself was a classic and the match ended with both teams scoring some superb goals with the final score being 3-3.

A nail biting penalty shootout loomed, the first that the year 8 boys have participated in. However, there was no need to worry as they kept their composure and won the fixture 3-1 on penalties and will now progress to the next round of the county cup!

Year 9

The year 9 boys’ football team have played superbly so far this season and made great progress to win enough of their fixtures to qualify for the county cup play offs. This fixture saw them travel away to New College.

The game was a close affair as always against New College with both teams creating great goal-scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, New College took more of their chances during the match and won 3-1. Despite the defeat, the team displayed great character and kept pushing for more goals until the final whistle.

Well done to all of the students involved and a big thank you to Mr O’Donnell and Mr Bryan-Dooher for leading the fixtures.
