On Thursday 14th March Mr Carney, James, and ten students visited London. We were there to attend a talk named ‘Weird Science and the Search for God’, presented by Dr Michael D. Hurley, a renowned academic, university lecturer and author.
The talk focused around three main writers: Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes stories; J.R.R Tolkien, author of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’; and poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, who is most famous poem is called ‘God’s Grandeur’. We arrived at St Pancras station and walked towards Farm Street Jesuit Church, a beautiful church, open in 1849 and is the home of the Society of Jesus. During our walk from the station, we were able to take in the sights of London, visiting the British Museum to see the Egyptian Galleries.
I found the talk very interesting, it made me think about my religion and how God can be found anywhere we look for him. The talk was excellent, as it was funny, and was relatable, talking about aspects of life we have all experienced, and how we can apply our religious to our daily lives.

On Thursday 14th March, a group of students went to Farm Street Jesuit Church, London with Mr Carney, James and Father Martin. We were there to listen to a lecture titled ‘Weird Science and the Search for God’. Dr Michael D. Hurley (the lecturer) explained to us how Arthur Conan Doyle, Gerard Manley Hopkins and J.R.R. Tolkein searched for God in their books and poems. The lecture was interesting and I especially enjoyed the part about the Lord of the Rings as I am interested in Tolkein’s work.
