School Football Success

This term we have had an extremely busy schedule of extra-curricular sporting fixtures, especially within boys and girls football.

The year 8 Boys football team recently had a last 16 Leicestershire and Rutland County Cup fixture away against Rushey Mead. Despite losing in the match on two occasions English Martyrs' bounced back in order to take the tie to penalties. English Martyrs' eventually won the fixture 6-5 on penalties with thanks to Berry in goal and some excellently executed penalty kicks from a number of different players. The team will now face Brockington College in the Quarter final of this competition.

The year 9 Boys football team were unfortunately knocked out of the County Cup after losing on penalties to Wigston Academy following a 1-1 draw in normal time. The team have however been extremely successful this year in the National Cup and are currently preparing to play Meadowhead School, fromĀ  Sheffield in the 5th round of this competition. In order to make it this far they recently traveled to Lady Manners School in Chesterfield. Despite a long bus journey English martyrs' started the game very brightly and took an early lead through 2 goals from Raijuan. Lady Manners School did get a goal back before half time but a strong second half defensively display meant that we progressed from the fixture with a 2-1 victory. Players of the match were awarded to Raijuan and Keith, however the whole team performance was excellent.

Girls' football - On Thursday 5th December Miss Liburd also arranged friendly fixtures for a year 7/8 and year 9/10 Girls against our Anstey Lane rivals Beaumont Leys. On the evening their were over 40 students involved, with the year 7/8 fixture finishing 3-1 to English Martyrs' and the year 9/10 fixture finishing 3-2 to English Martyrs'. Players of the matches were awarded to Chantelle in year 7 and Rachel in year 10. Well done to all involved and keep an eye out for upcoming fixtures and after school training.

Congratulations and well done to all of the students involved with the excellent football success that English Martyrs' has had during this academic year!
