With sadness we announce the death of Mr Ted Brennan, JP, BA, Dip Ed, former Headmaster of English Martyrs 1967-1983.
Previously Headmaster of St Patrick’s School, Harrison Road, Mr Brennan joined English Martyrs’ School in the start of the fourth year of its operation in September 1967. When he became Head the school was a secondary school of approximately 450 pupils, and the national school leaving age was only 15. By the time he left “Fifth Form” had been firmly established and the school population numbered almost 1,000.
During his time Mr Brennan established the school’s reputation for offering a well-rounded catholic comprehensive education to all. He led many innovations including developing the curriculum, broadening the range of examination courses and creating the Sixth Form. In 1977 he opened a considerable extension to the school buildings with facilities for the Sixth Form, a new Library and Drama Studio.
Mr Brennan is fondly remembered by current and former members of staff and by his past pupils. As a community we offer our condolences to his children and grandchildren.
His funeral Mass will take place on Thursday 11th July 2019 at 11.00am at Mother of God Church. On this morning the school will gather for our annual Mass of Thanksgiving traditionally held outdoors each summer. This is an occasion which Mr Brennan knew well and had attended in recent years. As a community we will give thanks to God for the service Mr Brennan gave our community and we pray for the happy repose of his soul:
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, Let perpetual light shine upon him: May he rest in peace. Amen.
