Following the regional public speaking competition held at English Martyrs in January, Mr Carney received the following email from Mr Matthew Christmas of the English-Speaking Union.
“I am emailing to thank you for allowing the English-Speaking Union to hold one of our heats of the ESU-Churchill Public Speaking Competition once again at your school tonight… Please do pass on our thanks to your wonderful Head of English, Miss Fones, who coached teams and also hosted us so thoughtfully. The arrangements were excellent and all the visitors were made to feel extremely welcome.
This year, I am delighted that the English Martyrs’ Catholic School got through to the Birmingham and East Midlands Area Final which will be at Solihull School on Thursday 27th February 2020. One of your students – Dublin, speaking on “India is capable of feedings its own poor” – was justifiably the Best Speaker of the evening. All of your students were polite and hold themselves well; they speak thoughtfully and engagingly and are a credit to the school.”
Congratulations to Dublin, to all those who took part, including the Sixth Formers who coached our teams. Thank you to Miss Fones for enabling our teams to take part in such an important competition each year.
