Back in March 2020 when the first lockdown started, Mrs Bishop asked me to make some short videos about different composers, each lasting about five minutes, with links to further listening for anybody who wanted to discover more. The idea was to give a short introduction to a composer, illustrated with pieces of music. Some of the composers are famous, others much less well-known, but all of them wrote amazing music. The first series ranged from Handel and Bach in the 1700s, through Verdi in the 1800s, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Scott Joplin, Lili Boulanger, Vaughan Williams and Janáček in the 1900s, right up to Roxanna Panufnik – one of our most exciting living composers. All of these videos were posted on the @emsmusicdpt Instagram and they can be watched there by anyone following that page – not just students in the music department.
With the new lockdown in January 2021, Mrs Bishop thought it would be good to revive this idea, so we have just started a second series, beginning with the great American jazz musician and composer Duke Ellington (1899–1974). Watch it on the @emsmusicdpt Instagram, and find out about a new composer every week!
