Celebrating Candlemas

Today is the Feast of Candlemas – the commemoration of the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. He was met by two old people Simeon and Anna. St Luke says that Simeon, recognising Jesus as the Messiah, prayed this prayer:

Now Lord, let your servant depart in peace, according to your word.

For mine eyes have seen your salvation, which you have declared before all people:

A Light to enlighten the nations, and give glory to your people Israel.

To mark this beautiful feast we usually have form Masses and processions for Year 8 forms. This year James and others in school have prepared the chapel and lighted candles to accompany the prayers of the whole community, especially everyone who is not able to be in school at the moment.

We pray that we will be light for all we encounter today, and bring the light of God’s love to all this year.
