On Thursday 3 November 2022, English Martyrs' Year 8 boys' school football team competed in the third round of the National Cup at home, facing Prior Ruskin Academy.
The game kicked off with an energetic start from English Martyrs', putting pressure on the opposition, winning the ball and scoring within less than thirty seconds. The goal was scored by Taku, who placed the ball confidently into the bottom right hand corner, giving English Martyrs the early lead. Throughout the first half, the game was evenly balanced with both teams creating chances, however English Martyrs' held onto their 1-0 lead till halftime.
The second half began similarly to the first with English Martyrs' winning the ball and scoring again to make it 2-0, after the ball was played through to Isaac, who cheekily chipped the ball over the goalkeeper. English Martyrs' then scored again after the ball was crossed in and was finished in by Isaac again, who placed the ball into the bottom corner making it 3-0.
English Martyrs' then took control of the game, creating many chances, leading to another goal from Taku after receiving a through ball and going head-to-head with the goalkeeper. English Martyrs' then continued to work hard and dominated the last ten minutes of the game, securing the win with yet another goal, this time scored by Jason who tapped the ball in from the rebound.
The final result finished 5-0 to English Martyrs', who now face Wigston Academy away in the fourth round of the National Cup.
